FACING DEFICITS HE city of Detroit THE has just adopted a budget which provides for expenditures of ten million dollars more than the known revenue The administration was faced with the alternative of raising taxes to meet the expenditures or pass the buck for a year and thresh out a more serious problem at that time The Salt Lake county commission has taken a different slant on a similar problem Instead of going in the red the commissioners commissioners commis commis- have ordered department heads tomake to tomake tomake make budget cuts which will snip of off the total While there is a vast difference difference differ differ- ence in the amounts involved between Salt Lake coun county y and Detroit the principle is quite the same And no one looking at both problems will agree with the administration of Detroit that It is good business to go into int a heavy deficit when there may be plenty of ways to adopt a budget without deliberately running into an overdraft The department heads throughout the county administration may not favor the re reduction reduction re- re of but common sense must tell them it is good business if the anticipated revenue is that far short of budgeted expense expense expense ex ex- ex- ex pense
