Show TAX STUDY GROUP REPORTS ON UTAH EDUCATION EXPENSES Expenditures at the Utah State Agricultural College totaled $3.3 million for the 1946-47 school year, according to a research report released re-leased today by Utah Foundation, the non-profit tax study agency. Regular college educational outlay amounted to $1.7 million, $800,-000 $800,-000 was spent for student activities activi-ties and auxiliary enterprises, and $812,000 for the Agricultural Experiment Ex-periment Station and Extension Service. Expenditures for educational purposes increased from $560,000 in 1937 to $1,659,000 in 1947. In- struction costs were $340,000 in 1937 and $937,000 in 1947. Enrollment at the USAC was 2,589 in 1937, increased to a prewar pre-war peak of 2,849 in 1940, then declined de-clined to a war-time low of 767 in 1944. Average quarterly enrollment enroll-ment for 1946-47 was 3,704, and rose to 4,058 for fall quarter of the current school year. Revenues of the College for 1946-47 came 46 from state appropriations, ap-propriations, 41 from student fees. The ratio in 1938-39 was 53 from state appropriation 28 from student fees. Federal grants and miscellaneous sources account, for the remaining portions. por-tions. Federal grants supply three-fourths three-fourths of the funds for the Extension Ex-tension Service, and one-third of the cost of the Agricultural Experiment Ex-periment Station activities de-r de-r signed primarily to serve the agricultural agri-cultural economy of the state generally. gen-erally. Comparing Utah State Agricultural Agricul-tural College finances with those of the University, the Utah Foundation Foun-dation report notes that costs and appropriations per student were lower at the Agricultural -College than at the University of Utah prior to the war, but were much higher during the war years and have remained higher thus far in peace-time. The war-time enrollment enroll-ment drop was materially greater at the USAC; the post-war enrollment enroll-ment bulge has been heavier at the University. The cost pe'r student reached $879 at the USAC in 1944 when enrollment shrank to 29 of prewar pre-war levels, compared with $259 per student in J938-39 and $317 for 1946-47. Non-resident fees at Utah colleges col-leges are third lowest among 38 state universities and colleges for which data are available. Utah's non-resident fee is $55, compared with an average for the 38 schools of $185. Six states charge $300 to $360, non-resident fees. This point has major significance with relation to payments made for veterans vet-erans under the G. I. program by the Federal Governments |
