Show CHERRY DISEASE DAMAGES TREES THROUGHOUT COUNTY A spot check survey is underway under-way to determine the extent of damage being done by Utah county cherry trees by the virus disease known as "Little Cherry," according to Joel Barlow, assistant as-sistant county agent. Plant pathologists who are conducting the survey, reported that quite a lot of disease is showing up in the orchards throughout the county, Mr. Barlow Bar-low said. "Evidences of the disease are I scattered pretty generally over the county," Barlow said. "There are no particular hot spots." Dr. B. L. Richards, head of the plant pathology department at the Utah State Agricultural college, col-lege, is directing the survey. Others assisting in the survey are Dr. Bryce N. Wadley of the TJ. S. Department of Agriculture, Dr. George W. Cochran of the experiment station at the TJSAC, Don Merkle of the state department depart-ment of agriculture, Clarence D. Ashton, state extension horticulturist, horticul-turist, and Mr. Barlow, along with four students from the agricultural ag-ricultural college. I "Within recent years, we've' been having a lot of cherry trees die in the county." Barlow point-1 ed out. "We didn't know whatj the cause was, but from what we have discovered in our survey this disease may have been to blame." Barlow said the group making the survey won't recommend that any trees be taken out this year. He .added, however, that after the experts have studied the results of the survey and talked with the growers on eradication erad-ication program may have to be carried out. |
