WHITING STARTS i BASKETBALL IN SOUTH AFRICA Juan Whiting, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Whiting, Mapleton, and who is serving on an LDS mission in South Africa at Capetown, has introduced the famed American winter' sport of basketball to the populace, and South Africans are I getting a glimpse of the sport, for the first time. Juan, who will he well remembered remem-bered for his line ability on the hardwoods both for Springville High and also at the University of Utah and the M Men league, is teaching the sport there with the help of fellow missionaries and converts, and reports that sportsmen sports-men as well as sportswriters for the papers in that vicinity are going go-ing for the popular sport in a big way. The first game was Dec. 27 in Capetown. Missionaries made the baskets for the eventful opener. open-er. He also plans to form a baseball base-ball team following the basketball season. |
