This represents an increase in-crease of more than 50 ver comparable expenditures during the 1946-1947 biennium, and an in- j crease of 225 over the amount expended in the two-year period, 1938-1939. Approximately $9 mil- lion will come from state funds, 1 $3 million from Federal funds, and the remaining $3 million from civilian student fees and miscel 1 laneous sources. ! The report indicates that the . major question relative to fmanc- ; ing public higher education u Utah ' concerns the extent to which pres- ( ent high enrollments are likely to , be maintained, and the degree to j which expansion of college facih- , ties based upon present enroll- j ments may be m keeping with sound public policy. Of the 12,228 students enrolled at the University of Utah and the Utah State Agricultural Agri-cultural College during the winter . nuarter of the 1946-47 school year, ? 021 or 57 were veterans whose Kn and fees were paid by the Federal government. Th-e Utah Foundation study otes that although fees paid for veterans by the Federal government govern-ment were higher than those paid civilian students, the veteran Z is substantially less than the actual per-student cost c ,f prodding prodd-ing college education in Utah. The study analyzes finances and enrollment enroll-ment of the University of Utah, noting that approximately $3 mi -lion was expended for regular college col-lege educational programs at the University of Utah for the schoo vear ended in 1947. This amount compares with $844,000 expended in 1937, and $1,075,000 in 1939. University of Utah average quar-teVly quar-teVly enrollment for the year ended end-ed in 1947 was 8,321, 122 above the enrollment of, 3,753 for the year ended m 1939. |
