Show Farmers Invited To Collect Metal For Defense Farmers of Utah county are urged to look over their yards for surplus scrap iron and make it available for steel and also defense, de-fense, according to an announcement announce-ment made today by S. R. Boswell, Utah county agent. The extension service and local Farm Bureau representatives are cooperating in a program to gather ga-ther the scrap from the farms and deliver it to the dealers Mr. Boswell said. Steel is made from half scrap and half pig iron. Scrap is used to make new steel and iron because it adds to the quality of steel and helps to keep the cost down. For every ton of scrap used we conserve two tons of iron ore, one ton of coal, and one ton of limestone. Steel mills are operating operat-ing with a dangerously short supply. sup-ply. Scrap prices are regulated by the office of price stabalization. Farm scrap is very desirable. Each farmer should do a thorough job of collecting scrap on his farm including in-cluding every obsolete machinery and should dispose of it to a scrap dealer. |
