Show PNEIIITIC IE IIELDSWFTS Utah "General" Company Is Making Public Results of Tests on Trucks. Since the advantages, of pneurnatic tires for trucks, in many kinds of service, have been heralded there lias been much' speculation specu-lation among- truck owners a.a- to the relative rela-tive merits . of .pncuma,t!c .ami . solid tires on trucks engaged in likn service, says the Utah General Tire- company. A western firm sufficiently interested in a comparison of the' two types to make an authentic cost, record., .which-, after all, constitutes the real authoritative and conclusive con-clusive proof of economical operatkri, has just completed a six months' test with interesting in-teresting results, Two truck,s were.used,( identical r make and size, one equipped with pneumatics in front and solids Irr the rear and the other equipped all around with pneumatics. At the end of the six months' period the all-pneumatic all-pneumatic truck- had traveled- 6000 miles, or f per cent fa rther than the other, whmh had gone 4800 miles. Hppairs on the pneumatic-tired truck amounted to $63.09, while repairs on the truck with solid lires cost $19.55, giving a saving of $66.46 for the truck with pneumatics. pneu-matics. A still greater proportion of saving Is show n in the gasoline record, the solid-tired solid-tired truck using IS 12 gallons in -S00 miles, whereas Lhe pneumatic-tired truck used 1 "20 gallons in covering 6000 miles. A t the nrevailing rate this represented a difference dif-ference of $1P7.4T. The truck on solid tires used K04 quarts of oil, or 144 more than the other truck, adding to the credit of the pneumatics $r.5.is. The company's books show that the driver of the trunk on pneumatics saved his employer 5161,00 in wages in traversing 2; per cent more ground than the other truck in-the same period. In the matter of depreciation, t cent was ciiarged off for every mile on the pneumatic tires and 3 cents per mile on the other, showing a margin of ?S4 for the pneumatics. The six months' test showed that the general pneumatic cord truck tires on the rear wheels, costing $300, paid for themselves them-selves and yielded a profit of $261.61. This, however, by no means represents the total profit that will be realized, for these tires may rcasonably.be expected to travel four times tho distance they have already gone. The test conducted by this company, it will be seen, proves conclusively the economies econo-mies that are to be gained in the use of pneumatics in service to which they are adapted, which in this case covered a reasonable rea-sonable speed requirement and ample cushioning ol the load. |
