Show FORMER POLICE CHEF SUED FOR DAMAGES Shooting of Man Whom He Was Endeavoring to Arrest, Ar-rest, Is Basis. Special to The Tribune. POCATELLO, Idaho, May 8. Former Chief of Police George F. Sutherland of tb.ls city was made defendant today In a suit brought by Steve Adams, prominent local Creek, to recover $10,800 for damages alleged to have been suffered whon Adams was shot in the bick by the police chief on the evening of September 4, 191S. The shooting referred to In the complaint com-plaint occurred on North Twelfth street when Adams, bet tor known locally as "the Kaiser," rnd two or three other men were stagitur a free-for-all battle on the street. "When the officers approached, it is said, the men jumped Into a car and drove cutpide the city limits. This scene was repeated two more times, and each time tho officers were called to the scene of disturbance by residents of the vicinity, vicin-ity, 'hief Sutherland accompanied by two other officers. This time the men again tried to escape in their car, the former chief avs. and refused to stop at the repeated requests of the officers. Chief Sutherland then opened fire cn the car with the result that Ada ms was struck In the back. Today Adams filed suit to recover damages. |
