Show ANGELES EXECUTED. General Felipe Angeies, the Mexican military genius, has been executed for high treason in spite of extraordinary exertions upon the part of all classes of citizens to save him from a felon's fate. Carranza would not forgive rebellion re-bellion against his go-eminent and the ; doom of Angeles was sealed from the moment of hie capture. Of course, It is customary to execute rebels in all countries, and under ordinary circumstances circum-stances the Mexican chieftain would not be entitled to sympathy. But there is much to be said in favor of Angeles. He was the foremost military man of Mexico and he was famous all over the world for having brought tl.e French 75-millimeter gun to perfection, making It the best piece of artillery orduanco now in use. He was a graduate of the Mexican military school and was a gentleman as well as a soldier. He is credited with having saved the lives of many of his countrymen who had been condemned to death by Villa. His fatal mistake was in joining forces with the northern murderer and otltlaw. It is a great pity that a man of his ability abil-ity should come to such an inglorious end and, while Carranza msy gloat over tho downfall of another oppone.ot of his government, few Americans will justify his refusal to extend elemer.cy to a chivalrous foe. |
