Show JENNINGS ONCE " BE TO HE' Detroit Fans Impatient of Manager Who Fails to Win Flags. CHICAGO. Nov. 9. They are busy again In Detroit retiring Manager Hugh Jennings. It is rather an old game and has never worked out in previous seasons, sea-sons, 'and probably will not this year, although there is no certaintv about it until Jennings signs the papers, or doesn't, or there aren't any papers- for him to sign. The chief complaint of the fans fs that the Tigers ought to win the pennant and then don't do It. Jennings had three pennant-winners in a row and has never been able to repeat. He started winning win-ning pennants in 1907, and came back in the succeeding two years. He had a great pitching staff In those davs. with Wild Bill Donovan at thepeak of his career, and Willett, Summers and Mullin, They were all veterans, and grew aged In a basebnll way fn Jennings's hands and went the way of the superannuated baseball player. Since that time Jennings never has been able to develop another stellar pitching pitch-ing staff, although the Tiger owner spent a fortune in experiments and has combed the country for pitchers. Somehow, Hughie doesn't seem to be able to develop de-velop the youngsters, and there is comment com-ment that the redtopped and peppery attorney at-torney has such a sharp tongue that he scares a diffident player into fits so that he can't do himself justice. Jennings is of the old McGraw school and impatient of stupidity and mistakes which a youngster is bound to make. He is said to have broken the hearts of many young fellows who made good elsewhere. This may or may not be true, but the fact, remains that, try as he might, Hughie hasn't been able to assemble another an-other great pitching staff. This year he came closest, and another season should see him with the best outfit he has had in some time. There arc many severe critics of Jennings Jen-nings in Detroit who doubtless are to blame for the circulation of the report that he is to he deposed. Three pennant-winners In twelve years Is a great record for any btg league manager in fact, away above the average. aver-age. Detroit was knocking at the door this year, and has .always been well up in the race, so there doesn't seem Jo bet any real legitimate kick on Jennings. |
