Show NOTED MONTANA PIONEER IS DEAD "Custer's Last Fight" Best-Known Best-Known Work of Paxson, Western Painter. MISSOULA, Mont., Nov. 9. Edgar S. Paxson, Montana pioneer, Indian fighter and distinguished as a painter of western wes-tern life, died at his home today, after an extended illness. He was 67 years old. "Custer's Last Fight" was perhaps the best known of Paxson's paintings. Another An-other was entitled "From the High Places They "Watched the Tide of Immigration." Immi-gration." He painted six historic murals for the Montana state capitol and eight murals In the county courthouse at Mts-Boula, Mts-Boula, and also Illustrated notable books. Paxson began his art work as a scenic painter at Deer Lodge, Mont., in 1878, and devoted his talents largely to depicting depict-ing the American Indian and historic incidents connected with the Indians and pioneers. He took part In the Nez Perce war of 1877-IS78. served ten years in the Montana Mon-tana .National Guard, rising from private to second lieutenant, and was a first lieutenant lieu-tenant in the First Montana infantry at the outbreak of the Spanish -American war. Pnxson served eight months in the Philippines, but resigned his commission com-mission on account of failing health. Displays of his paintings were made at the Louisiana' Purchase exposition and the Lewis &. Clarke exposition at Portland Port-land In 1905. His work was also represented repre-sented In collections at Paris and London, Lon-don, as well as in the United States. |
