Ono steamship is believed to have foundered and four others are in distress tonight in Nova Scotian waters. The American steamship- Polar Land, -which was abandoned off the Cape Breton coast at 1 P. m. today, had not been found late tonight b3- tho steamship steam-ship Kanawha, which went to her assistance, assis-tance, nor had any of thc boats containing con-taining the vessel's crew of 00 men been picked up. Thc Kanawha should have neached thc spot given by the sinking Polar Land before dark, but the rescuo ship wirelessed tonight for specific instruction instruc-tion as to her' location when last heard from. The request is taken here to mean that the Polar Laud had gone down. Thc Greek steamship Platca is ashore at Sable island; the steamship Grel-stonc Grel-stonc is in trouble off Sable island, having hav-ing stripped hor propeller blades; the Tclemnchus, a coal boat, called for help off Cape Breton and another unidentified uniden-tified craft replied that she could not go to the Polar Land's assistance as she was in distress also. The crew of the Plat-a was landed at the life saving station at Sable island. Her captain reports his ship was undamaged. un-damaged. Late tonight the Canadian government govern-ment steamship Arnnmors. which had been despatched from North Sydney to the Qnelstone's assistance, reported that other rescue vessels were close to her, but that no aid could be given to the distressed vessel owing to the weather I conditions. |
