Show REDS SllP US Giants Forge Into First Place in National League. NEW YORK, July 20. Two changes in the standings of the clubs of the National and American leagues took place during the past week. In the senior circuit Cincinnati Cin-cinnati lost the lead on Monday, New York forging to first place and holding it. In the younger organization, the demoralized de-moralized world champion, Boston Red Sox, dropped .six games of seven played, and temporarily fell back to seventh place, giving way to Washington. Today's To-day's results, however, restored the Red Sox to sixth position. In the National league, the tailend Philadelphia ciub furnished a surprise by going through the week without a defeat, and this -performance encouraged the Quaker City fans, who are hopeful that "Gavvy Cravat h, the new manager, will succeed where Jack Coombs failed. The week's sensation in the American league was the retirement yesterday of Lee Fohl as Cleveland's manager. Tris Speaker will try to bring the 1919 pennant pen-nant to Cleveland. The Indians tied with the Chicago leaders lead-ers in scoring five victories to two defeats, de-feats, not including today's contests. The Boston American's poor record this year has been attributed in some quarters quar-ters to dissatisfaction on the part of the players toward Manager Barrow. In a statement issued by the team Friday, the Red Sox denied this was the situation, declaring de-claring their less than mediocre showing was due, in their opinion, to "accumulation "accumula-tion of bad breaks." Of the week's extra-inning games, two were notable, both played Thursday. One, between New York and St. Ixuis, went seventeen innings before Gallia received credit for a decision over Thormahlen, 7 to 6. The other game was a twelve-inning tilt between Jacobs of St. Louis and Meadows of Philadelphia. Meadows held the Cardinals to four hits and won, 1 to 0.
