Show FOREST FLUES I STILL SPREADING I Thunder Mountain Regions of Idaho Huge Caldrcn of Smoke. j BOISK, Idaho, July 20.- Forested areas in tiie eastern section of the Thunder Mountain region of southern Idaho are a caldron of smoke, and there is no way to estimate how many new fires are eating eat-ing into the timber of that region underneath under-neath the hazy pall. Lookouts stationed! in the Sawtooth National forest, overlooking the burning timber, reported today to federal forest and land officials here, through Sawtooth forest officials at Hailey, that the smoke may h3 screening many large firew. The officials here were today expecting any momen t a call for men to go into th e eastern Thunder Mountain region. In the meantime, s-'outs have been sent out from forest offices at Hailey and Challis to investigate the extent of the fires in the smoke-covered valleys. The governor's office has received a wire from Addison T. Smith, congressman congress-man from Idaho, that lie will introduce, Monday morning, an emergency bill asking ask-ing for an appropriation of one million dollars to fight forest fires in this and adjoining states. Representatives from Washington. Oregon and Montana are said to be cooperating with Mr. Smith to rush through this relief measure. Governor Gov-ernor Davis had wired Mr. Smith for an emergency appropriation of SuOO.OGO to combat the flames in this state. SPOKANE. Wash., July 20. With calm weather and augmented forces of fire fighters the forest fire situation in northern north-ern Idaho appeared much improved today, according to advices received here. But one fire, on Bear creek, in the Coeur d'Alene forest, gained headway, according to Meyer Wolff, supervisor of the forest. |
