Garrett was circled president of 'the Yount; Men's Hopublican club last niht at the annual election of officers of the club, succeeding N. 0. Morgan. The election took place in the city and county building- with seventy-five members present. Other officers of-ficers selected were 3 Ingham H. Clegtf, vice 7resident, to sticceed II. H. Smith; A. K. Mr. Wmi tli, in the absence of Mr. Morgan, pin-sided at the meeting and introduced former Governor Arthur L. Thomas, T. L. Ilolnian and Mr. L'legg, wlio gavio brief addresses. Following the election Mr. Garrett, in a talk before the members, said: "I am deeply appreciative of the honor you have conferred upon me. 1 am not given to many words, but this I do say, that, having been a Kepubli-can Kepubli-can since my first voting day, 1 have this object in view as president of tiiis organization, to do all in my power to maintain the traditions of this organization, or-ganization, which was founded to advance ad-vance and promulgate the principles of the Republican party. .During my administration ad-ministration the doors of this club shall swing wide open to all men owr the age of eighteen years who espouse the principles of Americanism, which means liepublicanism. "Moreover, the cooperation of this organization will be given to all organizations or-ganizations and societies and clubs that nave for their object the advancement of the doctrines ' of the great, grand Republican party. "Mv keynote" and policy will be to work i'or the triumph of the Republican (tarty in the nation and the state, the county ail the city. ' 1 shall know only this as a personal per-sonal matter that I have no political axe to grind, unless it may be charged that one who believes that the election elec-tion of a wonderful man and a. great statesman to the office of United States senator from Utah may be charged as a personal matter. Then I plead guilty, because I believe that, and shall devote my best energy and seek to have the energy of this organization devoted to the election as United Slates senator from Utah of Eeed Smoot. ' ' The Young Men's Republican club was organized in Salt Lake twenty-five years ago and has entertained the late Theodore Roosevelt and former President Pres-ident William H. Taft, both these men being made honorary members of tho club, while visiting hero. A resolution was adopted during the meeting last night carrying the pledge of each present member to bring ten new members to the next meeting, which will be held Tuesdav, January (i, 1920. |
