Show TRADING WITH GERMANY. The depariment of commerce of tho United States has made public figures indicating a renewal of trading with Germany by this country and Great Britain, remarkable for its growth in the year since the signing of the armistice armi-stice with the Teutons. Exports from tho United States for the first ten months of the present year totaled ."ifl, -12(1.095, the imports from Germany being $4,9 14,787. Great Britain from the signing of the armistice to October 1, exported to (Vrmany goods valued at more than $50,000,000, and received goods from Germany valued at $1,-"S5.000. $1,-"S5.000. Here is seen an evidence of Pritish reluctance to take goods from Germany and a readiness to sell to the Teutons. Department reports are that the United States is rapidly overtaking overtak-ing Great Britain in the rush for German Ger-man trade. Equally significant are the department's depart-ment's figures dealing with the expansion expan-sion of trade in Latin-America. Exports Ex-ports to South America in the month of October of this year amounted to 39,2S0,2W, against $17.431, G2 1 a year ago. Argentina received $13,874,154, or nearly three times as much as in October of IfllS. Brazil, with $12,-279,000 $12,-279,000 to her credit, took almost six times as much us a year ago. Chile alone siiotvs a decrease. Imports from Scutii America for October amounted to 0SJ7,02J, of which Argentina contributed con-tributed more than $23, 000, 000, Brazil $21, 171. 000 and Chile $5,000,000, in round figures. The Latin-American trade balance, therefore, still continues in favor of the southern republics. American commerce has shown a decided de-cided impetus despite untoward domestic domes-tic conditions. When industry in tho United States finds its feet and something some-thing like normal production is had a steadily increasing volume of traffic to Europe and South America may bo expected. ex-pected. Fortunately for the future of our international trade the merchant marine is building to the stage where carrying capacity will match the production pro-duction and growth of export business. |
