Show MURDER 10 II J MLlrl Imported Thugs Attack Primary Pri-mary Candidate and Kill Policeman. PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 19. This city Is aroused by murder and riot today in the fifth ward, known as the "bloody fifth." The murder, that of a policeman by a man declared to be a gunman im- ported from Jersey City, was the outcome of a bitter political fight between two rival ri-val Republican factions for the control of the ward which skirts the river front. For weeks the battle lias waged, culminating cul-minating today when the primary election elec-tion was held for the naming of candidates. candi-dates. James A. Carey, holding rather a prominent city office, and Isaac Deutsch were the opponents for the nomination for select councilman from the ward on the Republican ticket. Early in the day Carey, while malt ins the rounds of the ward, was attacked by a man alleged to , be Jacob Mascla of Jersey City. He was struck from behind with a sandbag and then blackjacked. At the same time J. H. Maurer, an assistant district attorney, was attacked. Policeman George A. Ep-pley Ep-pley went to their rescue and it is alleged Mascia placed a revolver against his ab- . domen and fired, lippley died later in i a hospital. On his deathbed he identified Mascia as his assailant. Mascia was arrested and, along with him. Joe Costello, also of Jersey City. The police questioned them for an liour and later announced that both men had confessed con-fessed they were hired in New York or Jersey City with nineteen others and brought here yesterday to vote for Deutsch. Masela is charged with murder and Costello Cos-tello with being an accessory to the crime. Mascia denied that he did the shooting. Today's rioting was the culmination of trouble which began last night when about thirty thuss nttneked the Finletter club, the Republican organization headquarters head-quarters in the Fifth wiird, and shot up the place. The ballot box from the missing division disappeared soon after the polls closed and had not been located at a late hour tonight. |
