Show CATHOLIC SOCIETY TO BE REORGANIZED Archbishop Messmer Announces New Plans of Colonization Auxiliary of Church. CHICAGO, Nov. 20. Reorganization of the national colonization society of the Catholic church, with Archbishop Sebastian Se-bastian G. Messmer of Milwaukee as director di-rector general, was announced today. The purpose of the society is to rescue the immigrant who was a farmer in the old country and finds himself misplaced in the cities, and establish him on the soil. The organization, which has no capital and makes no profits, and neither buys nor sells land, is to safeguard and assist in every manner members of the church who desire to resume agricultural pursuits. Agents of the society will examine the soil, give expert advice as to crops and assist with money where necessary. The society in years past is said to have made local successes in starting colonies, as did Archbishop Ireland in the northwest. The reorganization wa decided upon in answer to the need for expansion in order to meet tha demands of the war for greater crops. |
