Show SHERIFFS OF UTAH - hold nm Appoint Committee to Draft Legislation for Higher Compensation. CORLESS IS INDORSED Peace Officers of State Urge Re-election of Salt Lake Man. A pica for greater compensation for Utah sheriffs was the subject of a speech made last night by Sheriff John S. Corless of Suit Lake county coun-ty at a banquet tendered to the Utah Sheriffs ' ashoein t ion by Simon Bamberger, gubernatorial candidate, at the Newhouse hotel. Tho sheriffs are in. Salt Lake on the occasion of their convention. "Like many others appreciative of the risks involved in the performance of the duties of a sheriff," said Sheriff Corless, "1 am in favor of an equal wage for all these guardians of the peace and good order of our state. There are many gathered here tonight who are, unfortunately, scarcely in receipt of enough money to urge them on in their best efforts, to say nothing of shouldering shoul-dering expenses incidental to the keeping keep-ing of body and soul together. At the coming session of tho legislature this condition of affairs should be brought to the attention of our lawmaking body, and, regardless of political affiliations, measures should bo passed to afford relief re-lief to sheriffs.'' Sheriff Corless 's remarks were greeted greet-ed with much applause, aud a committee commit-tee was appointed to draft the proposed legislation and submit the same to a special meeting, to be held in December, to be ratified fend made the concerted voice of the Utah Sheriffs' association to be heard at the next session of the legislature. Corless Is Praised. Frank Newman, manager of Pantage theater, a guest of honor, addressed the gathering. 1-1 e voiced his appreciation of being allowed to participate in their merrvniaking and said lie felt it a double honor to be allowed to say a kind word iu behalf of Sheriff Corless, the Democratic-Progressive nominee for re-election to the of lice of sheriff. "The record of Sheriff Corless since and before be-fore his incumbency in office stands .before .be-fore us as a beacon light," he said. "He has showed the public in the performance of his duty that no mistake was made in his selection two years ago, and it would be but an act of righteousness and reward re-ward for his earnest and fruitful efforts to again place him in the office, the duties of which he has ho honorably and efficiently discharged." Deputy Sheriff Joseph Raleigh made an address on social conditions in Bingham. Bing-ham. , Addresses were also made by Carl Carstensen, chief criminal deputy; E. O. Reading, sheriff of Davis county and secretary and treasurer of the association, as-sociation, and Deputy Sheriff W. E. Schoppe. A standing vote of thanks was extended ex-tended to the host of the evening, Senator Sen-ator Simon Bamberger, after which the sheriffs adjourned to Pantages theater, where they witnessed the performance as the guests of Manager Frank Newman. New-man. Corless Indorsed. ' At yesterday afternoon 's session of the convention, conducted at the City and County building, the service of John S. Corless to his countv and tho state as sheriff of Salt LaVe county was unanimously indorsed by those present. pres-ent. The, resolution of indorsement was offered by Sheriff Henry Fast of Utah county and seconded by Sheriff ,T. M. , Burns of Sanpete county. The resolu- tion concluded with a recommendation to the people of Salt Lake county that they continue Mr. Corless in his present pres-ent office, in the interest of the best protection of public peace and order. |
