Show AMERICAN CONTROL. The International Mercantile Marine, which has so often been referred to as the "shipping trust," is to be reorganized reorgan-ized and will be under American control con-trol in future, the National City bank of New York becoming dominant in the affairs of the company. The Morgan bank and British interests will .be represented rep-resented upon the board, but will no longer have the say. The National City bank and the International corporation, a subsidiary company, represent the Rockefeller financial power in the United Unit-ed States. Some time ago these two powerful concerns began to take an ec-ti ec-ti ve interest in shipping, with the result re-sult that they now control all the important im-portant American lines or can secure such control at any time. Having plenty plen-ty of money with which to swing any kind of a deal, no difficulty has been em-oun tered. We are glad to learn that the International Inter-national Mercantile Marine is in American Ameri-can hands and we hopn that the vessels will all fly the American flag in due course of time. At present most of the shipping companies which make up the International are registered as British and, of course, sail under the British flag. A great number of these vessels have been commandeered by the British government for war purposes, which under the circumstances is perfectly right and proper. But if theIuter national na-tional Mercantile Marine company is to become the chief shipping concern of the United States all the vessels employed em-ployed should fly "Obi Glory" at the masthead and .be subject to the call of our government in case they should ever be needed for transports or for &y other purpose. The National City bank of New York, with branches in South America and also in other parts of the world, will be able to exert a powerful influence upon the foreign trade of the United States, now that control of so many steamers has been secured. This is another an-other one of the indications that the European nations are going to meet with the stiffest kind of competition when they try to control the markets of the world and that the United States is acquiring a merchant marine without government aid in any manner, for the Rockefeller interests are able to build ships and subsidies appear out of the question. |
