Show " ZEPPELIN Hi : IS REGARDED AS ; H IIEEFA1 LU R E Only Two of the Ten Airships Air-ships Crossing the Channel Chan-nel Attempt to Attack ' British Capital. LONDON", Oct, 2, J1:i!u a. in. Ten Zeppelins took part in last night's raid . over KnIaml. Two of thorn attempted to attark London. One was driven away, but the other was destroy cil. An official account of the raid follows: ''Ten airsliips crossed the east coast last nijrht between 9 o'clock and midnight. mid-night. One airship approached the north of London at about lu p. m., but was driven off by gunfire and pursued by aeroplanes. She attempted to return from the northwest, .but was attacked by guns and aeroplanes and brought to earth in flames near Potter's bar shortly short-ly before midnight. ' ' A second airship attempted to at- tack London from the northeast and ' was driven off. Bombs were dropped. "The remaining airships wandered nimlesslv over the eastern counties. I n Linrolnshi re bombs were dropped promiscuously, pro-miscuously, most of them in open country, coun-try, without doing damage." Count's Friends Alarmed. Friends of fount Zeppelin were alarmed when they learned that another airship had been brought-down in Eng-b Eng-b land last night, says the Amsterdam correspondent cor-respondent of the Exchange Telegraph company. Th" count intended to take part in the raid, the correspondent cables, ca-bles, but a message sent to Germany elicited the information that at the last moment, owing to the persuasion of his family, he decided not to join the raiders. Except for part of the envelope, there is left hardly a vestige recognizable as part of the huee airship which was b rough t down last night near Potter 'a bar. The Zeppelin burned more fierce! v than the one previously destroyed, which, like her, fortunately fell in an open field. i The members of the crew were incin- erated and the bodies scattered over the field in which tho airship alighted some eighty yards from a farmer 's cottage. The Zeppelin appeared to remain almost al-most stationary in the air for three minutes after the envelope burst into flames. , The tongues of fire seemed to lick along tho bag nntii it was all ablaze. Even then it dropped so slowly that many persons who had not awakened m until the cheering aroused them were able to reach their windows in time to see it fall. Neither the airship which was destroyed, de-stroyed, nor the second one which attacked at-tacked Loudon succeeded in penetrating the outer defenses of the capital. Little nr no damage was done by either of them or by the eight others which op-Ik op-Ik crated over eastern counties. One person was killed and one in- jurcd in the raid. The material dam- age was small. "Police reports show that the total casualties in last night's raid wore one man killed and one woman injured, ' ' says an official statement made public this afternoon. "The material damage was insignificant, although the raiders covered a wide area and dropped a great number of .bombs. Four houses were seriously damaged. Some glass houses were demolished and a number of windows win-dows were broken." ' Berlin Account. BEKLTN, via London, Oct. 2, 11:02 p. m.
