Show THE GAINS. The latest gains of the British and French on the Somme make their total-gain total-gain in this zone about 125 square miles since their offensive began three months ago. The total gain of the Germans at Verdun was about 100 square miles. The recovery of territory by the allies has been insignificant, but the purpose of the attack is the driving of a wedge which will force the invaders out of several thousand square miles. The Germans still hold more than 9000 square miles of France, whereas the French hold only( 125 square miles of Germany, that is to say, a small strip of I southwestern Alsace. The central powers, however, have been losing great areas of their own and conquered territory since the beginning of the year. There only gains are the 100 miles at Verdun, about 2500 square miles in the Dobrudja province of Rumania Ru-mania and about 100 square miles of Itnly.
