TEACHERS UNDERPAID , State Superintendent Points Out That Local Schedule; Are Extremely Low. t So insistent lias been tho demand from eastern teachers seeking information informa-tion concerning how they may bosomo eligible to teach in Utah, and what tho I requirements and pay are, that Dr. E. j (t. Gowans, state superintendent of public pub-lic instruction, has had prepared a bulletin bul-letin giving the necessary general in- tor mat ion concerning the schools of 1 Utnh. J The general information is aet forth f as follows: I Th e school s a re o r ga n i zed i n t o thirty-four county school districts and five city school districts. Each, of these districts is under the control con-trol of a board of education elected by the qualified voters. Superintendents Superin-tendents of county and citv districts dis-tricts are appointed by the boards of education. Length of Term. Tho school year in tho city districts dis-tricts ranges from thirty -six to thi rty-niue weeks; in the county districts, from twenty-four to thirty-six weeks most of them morp than thirty. The following information is compiled from the reports received when this circular was published. Since not all reports were in, these figures can be. given only as approximate. ap-proximate. Utah public, schools employ about 2750 grade teachers and about 40 a high school teachers. The number of children of school age from 6 to 18 years is about 128,000. The information naturally moat sought by the eastern teachers is con- corning salaries. Salary Schedules. The facts are as follows: High school principals, lowest average, $1072; highest district average, $3387; average for state, $1700. High school teachers, male, lowest low-est district average, $810; highest district average, $1315; average for I state, $1050. II igh school teachers, female, lowest district average, $030; highest high-est district average, $1150; average for state, $998. J Grade principals, lowest district f average, $576 ; highest district average, $2088; average for state, j $1067. , Grade teachers, male, lowest (S.w trict average, $455; highest district average, $1004; average for state, V $080. V Grade teachers, female, lowest district, average. $385; highest district dis-trict average, $S30; average for state, $635. When asked concerning how the Utah pav compared with that of other states. Dr. E. G. Gowans, state superintendent super-intendent of public instruction, tried to keep a straight face and his temper. He wound up by saying: Teachers Poorly Paid. "Anvone who says our teachers are getting too much money has a fight on his bands with me." Tt is explained that all the high district dis-trict averages, with ooc exception, are for Salt Lake districts. The exception is the pay for high school teachers, fe- male, in "which Ogden takes the lead. |
