Senator Reed Smoot has been placed 10 oh!,r-0 of the Republican campaign to elect United states senators in Mon-taua, Mon-taua, Arizona and Xevada; the national comm.ttee also taking it for granted that Ttah will bo safely Republican. Since congress adjourned Senator Pmoot has spent considerable time in conference confer-ence with National Chairman Willcox and Governor Charles K. Hughes, goin'o over the political situation in the inter mountain west. On Way to Salt Lake. Senator Smoot left Washington yesterday yes-terday for Salt Lake, but will stop a day or two in Chicago. He is expected to reach here Sunday afternoon. While maintaining headquarters in Salt Lake Senator Smoot will direct the fight to elect Republican senators in Nevada Montana and Arizona, as well as take an active part in the Utah campaign. At the session of congress just closiyl the Democrats had a majority of seA enteen over the Republicans in the upper up-per house. There has been a strong belief around the senate chamber thai the Democratic majority in that bodv was so impregnable that the Republicans Repub-licans could not possiblv regain control of the upper house before 11121. Republican Re-publican leaders now insist that this belief is a myth and have laid plans to begin a terrific campaign to change the political complexion of the upper house. Views of Situation. The average Republican takes it for granted that the lower house will pass into the hands of the Republicans at the coming election. In fact, many Democrats are said to have admitted that it is their belief that the time is at hand for the pendulum to swing back and place the Republicans in power in the lower house. The possibility of a deadlocked con-W con-W gress does not "appeal to either party f and the Republican leaders have sud-. sud-. denly awakened to a realization that in " . case Governor Hughes is elected with & Republican house of representatives nothing could be accomplished in the way of restoring Republican legislate e policies as long as the Democrats are in control of the senate. It has been decided by the Republican leaders, therefore. ' to concentrate their efl'orts to a great extent on the election of Republican Re-publican senators. |
