Show H CA N'T HIT? WHO, VERNON? OH, SUKE! ffl TIGERS WHANG OUT VICTORY IN NINTH; PUT SEVEN ACROSS After Pitching Great Baseball for Seven Innings, Gregory Weakens in Eighth and Is Slaughtered m Ninth; Saints Stage Rally Against Quinn in Last Inning, but Decanniere Quickly Ends Their Chances. i At Salt Lake Vernon 10, Salt ;$ Lake 8. At San Francisco Portland f, Oakland 1. At Los Angeles San Francisco Fran-cisco 2, Los Angeles 4. f jj f HE only baseball contest that lias been offered at Majestic park in the last two weeks was knocked in the head iu the ninth inning yesterday, yes-terday, when the Timers leaped on Howard How-ard Gregory and busted him for eight hits, counting a total of sixteen bases, and netting seven runs. A little excitement was injected into the proceedings when the Saints in their half of the ninth staged a rally calling tor four runs. The come-back" was set up against Jack Quinn, but Frank Decanniere came in pretty quick and shut the Saints off short dog gone short. The afternoon's work closed with a i 10 to 8 score for Vernon. Is Real Battle. In the innings preceding the eighth Howard Gregory, making nis reappearance reappear-ance as a Saint after a season's absence, and Art Fromme mixed in a spirited : little duel, with Gregory having a large i dark shade. In one way or another the Saints made three tallies, aud the Tig ers made one up to the eighth. Then Gregory weakened and he was tickled for some long distance clouts which netted the Tigers two and tied the score. The locals scored in their half of the eighth and went into the lead by one. Tiie awful bombardment of the ninth eame after two were out and there wete pigns of a regular victory for Salt Lake. However, there hav-e been delusions of that kind before. The rapid fire of the Vernon ,-rtillery began after the second man was out and didn't stop until the score stood 10 to 4. L Had Gregorv been removed reasonably ;arlv in his downward career the result .'t JTnight haVe been different. Also, if that had happened, maybe Salt Lake wouldn't have gotten their four runs in I the ninth. Managing with tbe second guess is not only futile, but also it is a I waste of valuable space. Freak Homers. Yesterday's game was featured by two freak 'home runs, one by Vernon and the other by Salt Lake. In the second inning Gislason hit a ball to lelt field fence. In rebounding from the fence it eluded Hillyard's eye, and be. fore it could be located Gislason had crossed the pan. in the ninth inning ( harlev Schmidt, hit a single to center fild. It was a good enough single, and when it bounded over Quinlan s head and went to the clubhouse door it became be-came a home run. n.j,i An unusual circumstance attended yesterday's game in the mber ot three-base hits recorded for Veinon. Owing to the peculiarities of the enclosing enclos-ing fences at Majestic park three-be hits are rare, and the three triples hit bv Vernon batters yesterday set f sort of record. Chick Mattick got two of them. Saints Lead Off. . The Saints got down to business ; in he first inning, when Slum; 's lk . ' nd Kath's double counted the first tall).
