Show POINCARE PLEASED WITH STATUE LIGHTS Sends Message to Be Read at Formal Dedication Tonight; President Wilson Invited. NEW YORK, Dec. 1. A message from President Poincare expressing the appreciation of the .French republic to those citizens of the United States who contributed to the fund that will provide pro-vide permanent illumination of the Ptatue of liberty, from torch to base, jvill be read tomorrow night hv Am-naaflador Am-naaflador Jusserand at a dinner here in hnnor of President Wilson, whose wireless wire-less signal from the yacht Mayflower will flood the statue with light. President and Mrs. Wilson, Secretary of the Navy Daniels and an official partv from "Washington will arrive in this city at 3:18 p. m. and will be escorted es-corted by Mavor Mitchell and a committee com-mittee to a North river landing, where tho president and hig party, Ambassador Jusserand and Mine. Jusserand and Ambassador Am-bassador and Mrs. Gerard will be taken aboard the Mayflower in navy tugs. At 4:30 p. m. a procession of yachts will start for the statue, led by the Mayflower, and the battleships anchored an-chored in the North river will fire salutes sa-lutes of twenty-one guns. A red rocket will signalize that the president is about to touch the button releasing the electric current, and as the statue is illuminated the warships' guns will roar again. A parade led by the president will start from Battery park and move through streets which will be ablaze with lights. The naval yacht Dolphin, which started start-ed for New York last night, returned to the navy yard at Washington today with her steering gear disabled. Secretary Secre-tary Daniels and other officials who expected ex-pected to use the yacht will go aboard the San Francisco or the Yankton, now at. this city. |
