Show mm i MEET WITH DEFEAT British Foil Attempt of Major Ma-jor General Walhe to Take Offensive. LONDON. Dec. 1, 12:10 p. m. Conspicuous Conspic-uous success has been gained by the British in their campaign against the Germans In German East Africa, the war office announced today. On October 2f) a strong German force, commanded by Major General Walhe, dispatched dis-patched from Tabora (in the central part of the colony), came in contact with the British south of Iringa. The statement says : Simultaneously the enemy In the Mahenge area took the offensive against the British on the Ruhudje river, with the evident Intention of assisting the western German force to penetrate the British cordon and form a junction with the main German Ger-man force. The attempt to break through was repulsed near Aeuringa and the British Brit-ish gained a conspicuous success on . the Ruhudje river, driving the enemy over the river with the loss of 200 killed, eighty-two prisoners and booty. The main body of the western German Ger-man force divided in two parts. One Invested the British post at Lupembe and was driven off. The remaining force was isolated on the Ilembule mission station and forced to surrender surren-der about uOO on November 26. A howitzer, ammunition and three machine ma-chine guns were included in the booty. The remnants of Major General Walhe's force, having lost the bulk of their artillery and machine guns and suffering probably over 50 per cent of casualties, are making eastward for Mahenge. |
