Batting and Fielding Show Improvement; Championship Cham-pionship Series. THE indoor baseball girls at the . West Side high school this year are playing some great ball and tho interclass series . now being held is being hotly contested. Thus far it appears that the younger girls are the better players, judging from the results of the games. A few w'eeks ago the Monroo school, champions of the grade schools, defeated de-feated the freshmen. This' was regarded re-garded as a wonderful feat by the grammar gram-mar school ball players. Then the fresh-ies fresh-ies managed to oeat the sophomores in a hotlv contested battle, and last week both the sophomore and freshmen teams took tho measure of the junior-senior club. According to this record, therefore, the Monroe girls, theoretically at least, can beat any. class team at the "West Side high school and the junior East Side high school girls enn beat both the Monroe girls and tho West side players, play-ers, as the East Side team won from the Monroe team several weeks ago. When the league started the junior-senior junior-senior girls might well have been called "bush leaguers," but since that time one of the star athletes at tho West Side ha3 turned to bo a booster for the upper class girls and thinks they are really proficient stars of the indoor diamond. dia-mond. In the early season tho juniors and seniors could hit the ball, but once on the bases they were like Ping Bodie, lacking in the art of base running. Now the. girls hit tho floor and slide when a close decision looms up. The sophomores and freshmen play a very strong game, and much of their skill is due to the baseball played iu the grade schools. Long hits into the rnnning track are common at the high school class games. Disputes with the umpires show that the girls have inherited in-herited umpire baiting. The pitchers this year aro those who twirled last year, when ofttimes there were low scores in tho games. But this season the hurlers have their troubles and the girls clout tho heavers to all parte of fbe field. This makes it evident evi-dent that tho girls are improving in batting. Fielding and headwork also aro becoming be-coming prominent factors in the games and, instead of screaming when the opponents hit the brill, the fielders remain re-main tranquil, take their time and generally gen-erally can be depended on to shoot the ball to the right spot. It is not an uncommon thing to see the fielders nip the base runner at the plato on an infield in-field hit. , Several more games yet are to lie plavcd at tho West Side and when the series ends a series will be played, between be-tween the East Side and West Side champions. Miss Ruth Fermstrom deserves de-serves much credit for the great enthusiasm en-thusiasm shown hv . tho irirls and, although al-though tho boys do not play, they root for their favorites to win. |
