WASHINGTON, Feb. 6. As the result re-sult of discovery of foot and mouth infection in-fection in Chicago, Indianapolis, Louisville, Louis-ville, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Jersey City, Pittsburg and Coluinbua, the dopartrnent of agriculture today instructed its inspectors in-spectors to close yards in those cities to Interstate shipment of livestock after shipments in transit had been, disposed of. An order prescribing details and declaring de-claring whether the yards will be per-, mitted to continue to receive cattle for immediate slaughter will be issued la-; ter. As to shipments in transit, the, inspectors were instructed to allow the ! livestock to go forward if they showed no symptoms of the disease, had not J been handled in infected pens and were destined for immediate slaughter in 1 quarantined areas, where federal inspec- j tion of meats is maintained. j Loss from the foot and mouth disease : in the present outbreak thus far has 1 aggregated $3,399,110, the bureau of j animal industry announced today. The j outbreak of the disease now seems to ! be under control as a result of the vigorous vig-orous policy of eradication followed, the bureau states. .... There have been slaughtered 46,268 cattle, 47,735 swine, 7151 sheep and 22 goats. Bo far the losses are mainly local and had no appreciable general effect on the country's total supply of meat and dairy animals. In view of activities against the disease dis-ease on the part of authorities in various vari-ous states concerned, department officials offi-cials decided a federal quarantine ; would not be necessary at this time. Nevertheless the yards "named are closed for disinfection." Officials believe instead in-stead of a repetition of the recent quar-' antine over large areas, disinfecting of j the yards will suffice to stamp out the j latest outbreak, i j .Further conferences led officials to : conclude that no attempt would be made to stop the entrance of cattle to the yards for immediate slaughter, except m so far as the shipments come from other yards closed for disinfection. |
