Show CONCRETE CONDUIT TO COVER CANAL Motorcycle license Fees Are to Be Reduced, But Amount Has Not Boen Fixed. The Salt Lake and Jordan canal will be placed in a concrete conduit from Belmont street to Princeton avenue, a distance of more than half a mile, it was decided by tho city commission last night. An appropriation of .'pO'lUO to defray the expense of the improvement was authorized, with the understanding that halt' the work is to be done this year and half next year. Numerous petitions have been received re-ceived urging this improvement, and delegations of citizens have informed the commission that the canal was the source of disease and insanitary conditions condi-tions in the southeastern part of tho cit'. It is proposed eventually to eovor tho canal its entire distance within the city limits. Motorcycle licenses will be reduced. This was decided upon by tho commission commis-sion yesterday as a committee of the whole, but the amount of the reduction has not been determined. "Recently several sev-eral hundred motorcyclists petitioned for tho reduction, pointing out that automobiles arc subject to no tax other than tho $2 initial tax imposed by the state, which is good during the life of the machine, while motorcycles are taxed $3.2;"5 a year by the city. They asked for a reduction to $1. Clark L. Whitney has recommended that a reduction reduc-tion to $2 be made, but the commission, while agreeing that a reduction should be made, has not decided on the amount of tho tax. |
