Show PROGRESSIVES OF mm GOHFER Effort Being Made by Leaders Lead-ers to Prevent Merging With Republicans. ORGANIZER IS HEARD Makes Bitter Attack on Former For-mer President Taft and Senator Warren. 1 CASPER, "Wyo., Feb. 16. A resolution announcing opposition to amalgamation with any other parly was adopted at a conference of Progressive leaders from all parts of Wyoming here today. The conference was followed tonight by a mass meeting at which H. N, Gottllob, stale chairman, presided and speeches were made by Judge C. E. Winter of Casper, Fred Blumo of Sheridan and William Wil-liam 12. Cadmus, national organizer, of Illinois. Other resolutions adopted today declared de-clared for the cancellation of the state debt with funda now on hand; for a blue sky law; a law more fully protecting property rights of women? a "sane" conservation law; a state highway commission; com-mission; a public utilities commission, and denouncing the action of the Republican Repub-lican legislature In overriding Governor Carey's wish In the abolition of the slate Immigration bureau. Address by Cadmus. "The campaign of misrepresentation by Republican leaders merrily continues," declared Mr, Cadmus, addressing tho conference con-ference of Progressives hero tonight. "They are taking full advantage of the fact that they have the press and tho Progressives have not. Instead of changing chang-ing their principles to meet the popular domand of the times, Republican leaders prefer to deceive themselves Into thinking think-ing they can deceive the people bv false news concerning fusions, by misrepre- numauon 01 i-roKToesivo principles, oy Impugning the sincerity of Progressive leaders." Mr. Cadmus cited tho article by former for-mer President William H. Taft In tho current Issue of a weekly magazine as a case In point, and continued; "He charges the Progressives with trying try-ing to create a 'Socialistic democrarcy,' when our purpose is to create a social democracy. With artistic misrepresentation misrepresenta-tion he charges us with attracting to our party malcontents who want 'to lake from those who havo and gi'o to those who have not; redistribute the property of the country.' What a He! Scores Mr. Taft. "In the past eight months 1 have spoken to thousands of ProgrosslveH In thirty states and I have not met a man who advocated such anarchy. To his recreancy in not keeping solemn pledges upon which ho was elocted In 1908; to his egotism and stubbornness In demanding demand-ing in 1912 a rcnomlnatlon which his record rec-ord did not merit, Mr. Taft now adds such statements, the deliberate act of a demagogue. "Our party does advocate new measures of social and Industrial juBtlce. now actual ac-tual laws throughout much of Europe and progressive Islands like New Zealand and Australia; measures already used by many industrial co-oporatlvc -concerns In America, without Impairment of their proltts and with immense increase of mutual mu-tual good will. Is It anarchy for the Western Union Telegraph company to pension Us aged employees? Neither Is It anarchy for a political party, by some sane methods adapted to American conditions, condi-tions, to pension aged worklngmen. to securo thorn from the misfortunes of accident ac-cident or unemployment. Is it anarchy to prohibit child labor or the discrimination discrimina-tion against sex, cither In Industry or at the ballot? Because we advocate sane human Justice, to charge us with such anarchistic assaults against the Integrity In-tegrity of property and the security of society would bo cheap demagoguery In it bar loafer, let alone a former president of the United States. Attacks Senator Warren. "But Mr. Taft in theso false statements represents In virulent form the disease of 1113 party, it is tne eternal light of privilege privi-lege against progress. Wyoming knows whereof I speak. Tho Republicans of your last legislature fought Governor Carey and Ills Progressive measures at every turn of tho road. Had It not been for Democratic support, the foot, of your governor would have boon hobbled and your state would have made no progress. Led by Senator Warren, the Republican party of Wyoming Is hopelessly reactionary. reaction-ary. It does not even put up tho cheap pretense of being progressive. Just as Senator Warren's vast, holdings of grazing graz-ing land are used to keep back the small settler and the lncreaso of your population; popula-tion; are so held that you are denied proper roads by which you can get out of your cities; so the conservative Republican Re-publican party In Its national policy would Increase tho vast holdings of a few and would stop the ronds by which tho American multitudes may reach tho free fields of common Justice and life." |
