Of courso, to do this will take time; will take money and persistent and Intelligent work. I want to bear yon my tcstlmpny that we have the brethren at the home office who are willing to give the work necessary for the accomplishment of this end; willing to spend their time and their efforts to place us where we rlghtly belong, if we will hut stand at their back and support them. 1 am glad to see so many of the wholesalers and manufacturers pros-ont pros-ont at this conference. I can see nothing but good coming from a closer relationship of the retailer and the manufacturer. I think, perhaps, some of tho people who aro retailing lumber in a small way could toll you manufacturers things that would be of benefit lo you. "Absolutely." the byword of the conference, con-ference, was shouted in confirmation and approval of tho speakers' remarks fre-duently fre-duently throughout tho day. W. H. Miller, editor of the Western lumberman, acted as cheer leader. A. L.. Must Be Prepared. Then.- he said, the merchant must be prepared to give tho customer a price on tho millwork and lumber and tell him approximately what the entire building, will .cost. In his annual report, Secretary Porter said: Considering business conditions for the past year. It will no doubt be a great satisfaction to the members of this Institution to learn that the year Just, passed haB, in our opinion, been the most successful ono in our eloven years" history, for the reason that your association has now developed Into a real live, aggressive, result -producing body, actually rendering to those who will ask a profitable service serv-ice worth many times the amount of annual dues of 3 1-3 cents per day. You assemble at these conferences for many reasons, too numerous to mention, all of them, however, more or less profitable aB woll as enjoyable enjoy-able to you, but. In the final analysts, tho organizations, clubs, eociotles and associations to which you belong must prove to you that membership therein Is not only worth while, but profitable profit-able as well. This organization of yours Is no other than a business institution, and. unless your ledger account with tho institution shows a balance on the right side at tho end of the vear, it is hardly worth while. So "far as these annual conferences aro concerned, con-cerned, it is the aim of your employees em-ployees to make them a school for knowledge, so that after you have returned re-turned home and gone over In vour own mind everything that happened and was said you wilt realizo that, by reason of your attendance at the conference con-ference you aro equipped to make two sales whero- you made one ho-fore. ho-fore.
