Good roads enthusiasts do not hope to build an ideal road for the $50,000 but they do hope to bo able to iron out several bad places on tho road and place it in such condition it will bo more comfortably and pleasantly traversed tra-versed and to establish tho route so that it can be moro eatuly improved in the future. By private contributions and county appropriations they hope to increase tho fund for tho Utah link of tho Midland trail to $.100,000. When tho bill came up for passage yesterday President Gardner took the "floor and. urged that Spanish Fork be included among tho Utah cities through which the routo would pass. By going through Spanish Fork, President Gardner Gard-ner said the road would be about a mile longer than originally intended, but the road would be bettor and easier to maintain. In addition it would bring the transcontinental tourists in close proximity to tho Strawberry valley reclamation project. The amendment was iu sorted. Fair to All Counties. Senator Uharlcs Cottrell. Jr.. of Salt Lake wanted the route officially designated desig-nated as the Midland trail by the bill. Sovoral senators objected to the name becoming a part oi the bill and the amendment was lost. Senator Tj. B. Wight of Summit wanted the bill to specify that each county expend as much ns the state in tho construction of tbo road. It was shown that such a provision would be a hardship on Grand and Emory counties, which had much of tho road and 'but very little revenue. This amondment was lost. Sonator O. A. Iverson of Carbon , made a long talk in favor of the bill. He said that in July representatives of the American Autobornilo association associa-tion would bo here to inspect the Utah roarl and if thoy found it in good condition con-dition and capable of being mado into an oxcollont automobile highway they would undoubtedly designate it as a Sortion of tho transcontinental routo. 0 said that the association had lovicd a tux on manufacturers of automobiles for improving tho transcontinental highway and this tax would net $10.-000,000 $10.-000,000 for this purpose, much of which would doubtless bo spent in Utah, After considerable discussion tho bill was pussed with only Senator J. W. Funk of Cache votiug in tho negative, |
