Dress goods, suits, gloves, millinerv and the small accessories were strong sellers the past week. In all those lines there has been a consistent trade. In shoes, oxfords ox-fords took the lead over numerous other linos for the week. Tans wore especially espe-cially good sellers. In neat and substantial sub-stantial styles this color is moro popular than over this spring. An ovcry-day comment and compliment of visitors to Salt Lake is to the effect that more well dressed women are seen than in any other city in ihe western country. Merchants feel tho sirength of the compliment com-pliment when rhov know that out of their well selected stocks; tho wearing hpparel has come. Clothing in Demand. Clothing stores and men 's furnishings departments alike havo been drawing the trade for the week. While the continued con-tinued cool weather Jias caused a postponement, post-ponement, of the season's change in men's wearing apparel, the knowledge is that in a week or so the chango must be made, and on this knowledge tho men folk have conic to the conclusion that a selection 'mado ahead of time is better than- waiting until, everybody else has gone through the stocks and made selections. Novelty cloths are not as much in evidence for spring and summer as in season's past. There is moro of n leaning to blues in fancy serges and to conservative combination colors for business suits. Hals have not changed materially in color or shape. Neckwear offers a variety of selections, selec-tions, while there is a getting away from tho iron-clad rule, of dross established estab-lished a few seasons ago that, men's ties and hose must match, no matter the color of suits or shirts. Men's shoes take, to tan readily this season, and among the week's purchases are seen some of the mosi popular shades of tan. Blacks in sensible shapes, too, are popular. There is little tondoiuy to extreme in toes and colors. Hardware Trade Fair. Generally speaking,, hardware lines have been light, on the market in the past, week. Hand tools and leather goods have been tho heaviest lines from a trnde standpoint.' Harness especially is strong, the past week's sales showing show-ing up better than for several weeks past. House, furnishing goods, such as ranges and the like, have been light.' on the market. Lawn tools, mowers, hand scythes, spades and all garden tools have found' ready sales of late owing to the rapid 'growth of the grass. At this time the lawns of Salt" Lake'are in fine condition, having passed Ihe "whiter "whi-ter with little damage from freezing, while the early attention tjicy. have re coive'd has kept them " in first-class condition. Garden hoso has been one of Ihe big sellers for the week as a rq-suit rq-suit of the-' general attention given lawns and gardens in all parts of the city. Building- materials of all kinds have shmvn a stronger sale jn the last ton flays. Nails, cement,, lumber and all kinds of finished materials have been going out. in the past week to be put into numerous residences over the city. The past week lias seen a number of houses started while forces of workmen work-men have boon busy completing others. The general housebuilding fever apparent ap-parent in the. city, has made u good week in all building juaterial lines. |
