Revenge for having hav-ing been jilted by a. sister prompted a promlnonL young man In Vienna to slay his former schoolmate. The murderer Is Dr. Hofmclstor. an oftlclal in the ministry of finance', with a splendid career before him. who shot Franz lloldhaus, a bank clerk. The families fam-ilies of both men lived on extremely friendly terms until Ilofmelater foil In love with Frauleln Holdhaus and was rejected re-jected by her. Bitter onmlty sprang up between Hof-mclster Hof-mclster and his lifelong friend, young lloldhaus, Hofmeister becoming possessed pos-sessed of the .belief that Miss lloldhaus was influenced by her brother. For three weeks Hofmelster repeatedly tried to meet Holdhaus and challenge him to a duel, but lit vain. Lying in wait when lloldhaus came home, Hofmelster followed him up- the stairs, and on the third floor fired a revolver, re-volver, fatally injuring him in the abdomen. abdo-men. ' The doctor tired four more shots at lloldhaus. killing him as he lay on the floor, and then surrendered surren-dered to .the police.
