Show GOAL MINE EXPLOSIONS. Distressing coal mine horrors aro of such frequent occurrence, and they aro such stupendous horrors as a rule, that tho country will be glad to co-operate in every possible way with the newly-created newly-created Federal Bureau of Mines to put an ond to these horrors altogether, if possible, or if this is not possible, to mitigate the distress caused 1)3 them as much as may be. Dr. Holmes, who is an expert as far as any man can be an expert in this matter, and who is at the head of tho Federal Bureau of Mines, has just concluded con-cluded his preliminary investigation of the recent, mine horrors at Throop in Pennsylvania, and at Banner, Alabama, in tho latter of which negro convicts were chiefly victims. And he expresses his belief tlmt in both cases, and also in the ease of tho shocking explosion in the coal mines at Cherry Valley. Illinois. som -ighteen months ago, the horrors jnijlit have been averted, if there had been convonienfly at hand moans of extinguishing incipient, fires, nnd if Iho eniployeeH had been fully instructed what to do on seeJhg such fires at their first start. This is carta inly an- encouraging thing to. look forward to. and it. is a sign that wovliave at tho bond of the Miijiiq? Bureau a' man of oxporiouciJ nnd' of henrt to take hold of a question which is the-nVnst distressing thai, confronts con-fronts the. mining world, Dr. Jlolmes insists thai, there should bo more fireproof fire-proof construction, more facilities to shut olf the spread of fires, that, combustibles com-bustibles and explosives should bo segregated, seg-regated, .and -should always be. kept in smaller quantities in any one place thiui the usual meiliod of storing, and that, means of putting out. fires should bo immediately at hand at. overy danger dan-ger point. All this augurs well for tho pre vontiou of coal mine explosions, and Dr. Holmes will find, doubtless, everywhere every-where throughout the United .States, multitudes' of helping hands to further his work and to see that his oxpert, instructions in-structions are obeyed. |
