Show GREAT TUNNEL THROUGH BERNESE ALPS COMPLETED Special Cable to The Tribune. ICANDERSTEG. Switzerland. April 22. The colossal task of piercing the .Bcn-neso .Bcn-neso Alps between tho Kandcr valley on the north and the Rhone valley on the south has just been completed. The new tunnel, known as the Lolsch-berg Lolsch-berg tunnel, Is about nine and a half miles long, entering the mountains at ICanderstcg and emerging at Goppenstcln, near Gampel on tho Rhone. The completion of the tunnel will greatly great-ly shorten the Journey between Berne, Hasle. Paris, Calais. Brlgue and to the Slmplon tunnel loading to Italy. The present railway betwoon Berne and Brlgue Is forced by the towering Bernese Ber-nese Alps to make a long detour by the Rhone valley and Montrcux. Tho tunnel tun-nel has been under construction for live years and has cost $10,000,000. The last dividing wall between the two borings, which was about three feet thick, was pierced at 2 o'clock a. m. The hole- was not delected until the wreckage wreck-age had been removed. It was tlrst seen by a miner from tho south side, who sent a drill through the hole and then realized the fact and stopped the boring. There was then repeated and prolonged cheering through the entire tunnel. Flowers wero put through the hole for the engineer, Ilerr Rolplotz. to whose great energy was due tlusiracl that tho tunnel was pierced In so short a period. |
