Show GDVERKOR REFUSES 10 GRANT PARDON t. Thomas-E? Stripling Must Serve Life Sentence in Georgi.a for , Crime of Murder. i By Associated Press. ATLANTA, Ga., April 22. The application ap-plication for pardon of Thomas B. Stripling was denied by Governor .Brown late today. Stripling was formerly for-merly chief of police of Danville, Va., and was, under life sentence for killing W. J Corbet t. He escaped from officers offi-cers years ago and had been successful success-ful in b.usiness under np assumed name. After killing Corbqtt,- Stripling escaped es-caped before tho lifo sentence imposed on him had bogun. For fourteen years toothing wa3 heard from him. Several weeks ago he was recognized in Danville, Dan-ville, Va.. where he was. known as Morris, and was serving as chief of police. He was arrested, brought back to Georgia and placed in jail to await aclion on his appeal for a pardon. The request for executive leniency was based on the good record he made after his escape. Hundreds of letters from persons in Virginia and Georgia were received by the governor nnd prison commission' asking that Stripling be set free. This was opposed by the widow and relatives of Corbett. Stripling declares he killed Corbett because the latter insulted Stripling's siitcr. |
