Show SPOTTING A SPOTTER; HARD LUCK OF O'RQURKE j Special to The Tribune. PROVO. July 29. The way of the pro-hibitlon pro-hibitlon spotter is a hard one. at least it Is rather stormy for such people in and around Provo. Mike O'Rourke who was employed by tho officers of American Ameri-can Fork to secure evidence against boot loggers, ' and who was the prose-ciitlon prose-ciitlon witness In the cases of American Fork city against Frank Brown, a druggist drug-gist at American Fork, and a Mr. Nlel-son. Nlel-son. another alleged seller of tho drop that cheers, has been run off from the works In three different places in Provo where Jie secured employment. First lie was given a job a few days ago to work with a lot of other men on the I sewer trench that Is being dug In the east part of the city, but as soon as the workmen found out who their fellow laborer la-borer was they made It so warm for him that he had to leave. From there he I went to the Wheelrlght company, who ' have a contract for laying cement sldc- walks in tho city, and was given work, 1 with the same results. He was given just so long to hike out of it, and he ,' hiked. Yesterday ho secured ' emplov- ' mem on the Maeser Memorial building 6n ' the hill north of the city, and when he showed up this morning to commence J operations the rest of the workmen on ; H the building gave him to understand thai it would be unhealthy for him to remain around there, with the result that O'Rourke took the hint and left. The workmen, and in fact all other people of Proi'O. have no use for a hired spot-. spot-. ter. even a prohibition spotter. As a prohibition detective. O'Rourke : was hired by tho city of American Fork. and had as a partner one Gourlcy, and , when the cases which were secured by them came to trial, the prosecution I ! I I stated to the court that he could not ask for a conviction on what appeared on the face of It as perjured testimony. Thereupon Frank. Brown was promptly acquitted. O'Rourke and his partner then directed their attention to' American Ameri-can Fork canyon, with the result that Ray and Bert McGhle, two vouhg men residing in Amerlcnn Fork, were arrested ar-rested by the county officers on a charge of selling a bottle of whisky to O'Rourke and Gourley. The McGhle brothers were brought before Justice Noon here in Provo and were convicted on the evidence evi-dence of Hip same two men who were discredited at American Fork. O'Rourke is now trying to enrn a living by the sweat of his brow, but the sewer gang, the sidewalk pavers and the housebuild-ors housebuild-ors have registered their objections to worklnc on the same job with him O'Rourke will either have to work nil alone or go forac place where It Is net r' , known that he has been a prohibition diHoctlve. As a general thing, the great majority of the averace citizens do not like a spotter "nohow." |
