Show 11 Mi H SCHOOKOiTEST Miss Cooper of St. Mary's Wins First, and Miss McArfliur of Wasatch Second. The University of Utah assembly hall was crowded to Its capacity Friday evening, even-ing, when tho annual state high school declamation contest was held, there being be-ing eight high schools represented. The progmmmo was Intensely Interesting throughout and the majority of the hearers were pleased nt the decision of the Judges. Miss Olllo Cooper, from St. Marv's academy, won the decision .of tlio Judges and was presented with a bandsomo gold medal by Prof. George M. Marshall, who acted as chairman of tho contest. Miss Cooper wan heartily applauded. Miss Nellie McArthur. from the Wasatch academy, reciting "Tho Little Cripple," won second position and was awarded a handsomely bound book. "The Ruling Passion." by Henry Van Dyke. The third position, or honorable mention, went to Charles Glllls. from All Hallow college, col-lege, who rendered "G rat tan's Roply to Cory." Mr. Glllls did remarkablv well, considering the fact that he took the place of Nell A. Boyle, who was compelled com-pelled to withdraw Friday morning on account of illness, The selection rendered by the University Univer-sity quartctto pleasod the audience considerably. con-siderably. Tho Judges were Prof. Hownrd U. Drlggs. 1 1. Leo Marshall and Mhs Margaret Mar-garet Caldwell. Tlio awards were gifts from the university, which governs the contest each year. |
