CALDBR Valuable Suggestions Are Made for the Benefit of the inmates. Assistant Chief Fitzgerald of tho Salt Lake City fire department returned Friday Fri-day afternoon from Provo, whore bo hnd gone nt the Invitation of Dr. D. II. Caldi'r. superintendent of tlic Stale Mental Men-tal hospital, and David Mattson. clidlr-man clidlr-man of the state board of Insane, for iho purpose of inalclng nn examination of tlic lire equipment of the hospital. Assistant As-sistant Chief Fitzgerald spoke In tho highest terms of tho work of Dr. Cnldcr In tin t raining of tho Insane Inmates to h'it- the building In case of tire. Speaking Speak-ing of tho flic equipment nt the hospital Ans(;ln!it C'hlof Fltzgnrnld said: "I found that tho ladder equipment of tin' buildings wns of tho best, allowing liny portion of tho buildings to bo readily rojichcd from tho ground. Tho ladders, which aro of iron, can bo used with safety in going from tho lop of ono building to tho other. Pressure Inadequate. "Tho greatest danger to tho buildings in case of II r Is duo to the fact that tho maximum water prea-iuro Is slxty-llvo pounds and the minimum drops ns low a a twenty pounds. Considering tho fact that tno Inmates of tho buildings, which arc four r.torlcs high, are more helpless than so many children nnd a great deal harder to handlo In enso of fire, such a pressure Is entirely Inadequate. To meet this condition, tho hospital has In tho course, of construction at the present tlmo. n reservoir, which, when filled, will con-t:iln con-t:iln JC.OOO gallons of wiiter. "I have- suggested that this reservoir ho tilled at all times and held In reserve re-serve for fires, and that tho hospital continue to uso water for domestic pur-posos pur-posos from the Provo waterworks. With the 26.000 gallons of water held In re-servo re-servo the pressure In tho yard "of tho buildings will be nlncty-tlvo pounds, which Is ample. "I havo also reeommended that the hqrpltal he equipped nt onee Tvlth two thlrty-tlvo-gallon chemical tanks, mounted mount-ed on a wagon, attached to which tanks should bo ir0 feet of new hose. Spiral lire escapes have also bcon recommended. By aid of this Improvement all of the male Inmates In the hospital could be taken out In four minutes. New Equipment Needed. ' Four hundred foot of now hose nnd new nozzles havo also been recommended. Willi this equipment, which 1 consider absolutely nocessary. after a thorough examination ex-amination of tho buildings, tho Institution Institu-tion will be In a position to handle any flro which might endanger the lives of tho Inmates." Assistant Chief Fltsgernld was visited by Dr. Cnldcr and Chairman Mattson Wednesday afternoon last and they urgently ur-gently requested him to visit the hospital hos-pital at Provo and suggest the necessary equipment. Assistant Chief Fltzgomld will reduce his recommendations to wrlt-llug wrlt-llug and forward his report to tho hoard, after which the report will he submitted to the city council of Provo. The State Mental hospital Is paying to tho city of Provo 51000 for water each year and there Is some opposition to the construction of tho reservoir. Dr. Caldor has tho Interests of the Inmates at heart and Is pushing the matter of better equipment with the board. |
