Show I TILE INTEBUBBAN BEVIVED. It will be remembered that not long , ago "Uncle Joseo Knight was applying , for a franchise for an intorurban railway rail-way lino from Utah County to Salt ( Lako and through .Davis on (o Ogdcn. His application was contemptuously t rejected by tho County Commissioners ' of Salt Lako County without a hearing hear-ing and without notico Ito him. Jlc was given a full hearing by the Salt Lako City Council, and thnro appeared no reason why he could not construct his road lo (his eily so far as tho council was concerned. In Iho meantime, mean-time, howovor, he held corlafb meetings meet-ings hero with tho Snltair and other interests in-terests which resulted in his discouragement, discourage-ment, and he gave up the projccl, disingenuously dis-ingenuously alleging that, he did so because of Iho difficulty in gotting a proper franchise in Salt Lake. Prior to that, though. Mr. Knight had a tussle with the Ev.ins-Chipm.an interests in Ulnh County. Tho franchise fran-chise desires of Mr. Knight and of Hie Evans-C'hipman pcoplo conflicted; Lhcy hnd the panic idea, thoy both wanted to build tho intorurban road. Finally their interests wero joined, with Mr. Knight as tho leader in tho onlor-prisc. But now that Knight has retired, tho Evnns-Chipmnn people arc again to tho fore asking tho County Commissioners Commis-sioners of U(ah County for a franchise fran-chise for this same inlerurban railroad, rail-road, with liberty lo uso thc county roads of Hint county as right-of-way for their enterprise. There would appear ap-pear lo bc no reason why this new application ap-plication for a franchise should bc opposed, op-posed, since thero was no difficulty in Mr. Knight obtaining that franchise when ho asked for il. And as he got what ho asked, there ought (o bo no difficulty in tho L'vans-Chmman pcoplo pco-plo getting thc franchise over such of tho con n (3 roads in this county, as thoy may desiro to ubc for their inlerurban inlerur-ban road. So far as thc city is concerned, con-cerned, doubtless thc samo readiness to como to an agreement and terms for tho franchise into and through this city will bo accorded to thc Evans-Chipman Evans-Chipman pcoplo that was accordod lo Mr. Knight. Good progress was making mak-ing in thc Knight application, and if ho had persisted in his application doubtless it would havo been arrangod 1 1 1 .. 1 : r i : IU JllUlllill C5ilCIOll. LIUII. Tho Tribune is glad to sec thc revival re-vival of this project, and hopes that it may bc put through at as early a date as is possible. There is no doubt whatever about the value of such a lino of road io thc public; and wo presume that thc projectors of it havo figured a profit for themselves in tho enterprise, as good business men arc accustomed to do, and as Mr. Ivnight no doubt did. Tho enterprise, thoreforo, being of commercial value and of much importance to tho people, The Tribune heartily commends it, and hopes that it may bo pushed onward without delay. |
