Show WANT TO CEASE COPPERfPBRTS Monthly Producers' Figures May Be Concealed to Prevent Pre-vent Gambling Tendency. WALL STREET IS THE MAIN EXCUSE Some Members, However, Are Opposed to Any Chango in Procedure. According to eastern advices, there Is a movement on foot to cease tho monthly publication of the Coppor Producers' association as-sociation figures for the reason that these reports provide too great a chance for Wall street to gamble. Tho Wall Street Journal has the following to say In regard to the movement: "Ono of the most Important members of tho Copper Producers' association confirms tho report that the monthly figures giving production, stocks on hand, deliveries, exports, etc., will probably be abandoned In the near future. The matter mat-ter is now undor consideration. "He said: 'There is no moro reason whv wo should publish our stocks on hand than tho steel companies of tho country should publish theirs. Tho copper cop-per figures afford too much ammunition for speculation In Wall street. Besides, the public generally arrives at an erroneous er-roneous conclusion of tho monthly statements. state-ments. When there Is a heavy Increase in stocks, the cry of over-production goes up. The result is an unwarranted slump in copper prices. When there Is a reduction you hear famine talk, nnd copper prices move up. " 'I was not In favor of the publication publica-tion of monthly figures at the start, but certain other copper Interests believed they would bo a good thing for the trade. Some people seem to think that when wo have 100.000.000 pounds or moro copper cop-per or hand the copper market is on the verge of demoralization. Stocks on hand In tho world ioday are In tho neighborhood of 250,000.000 pounds, which is two or threo months' supply, and Is not threatening. Yet. these figures fig-ures give rise to tho worst kind of gloomy forebodings, and the man who Is not thoroughly familiar with the copper cop-per industry would be led to tho conclusion conclu-sion that the copper Interests were confronted con-fronted with disaster. " 'We have given the publication of the copper figures a thorough test, and many of the loading producers deem It to the best Interests of the trade to abandon them.' "News of the proposed abandonment of tho Copper Producers' monthly reports re-ports came, on the other hand, as a surprise to several members of the association as-sociation who said that such had not been discussed at the last mooting or at any preccdlnir meeting as far as they knew. 'It appears to me.' said ono member, mem-ber, 'that, to stop publication of the monthly statistics at this time would be a tactical blunder and ono that would allow foreigners to say that when we acquired anything moro than a normal stock of copper In this country we became be-came panic-stricken and took to cover As far as I know, there have been no complaints about the association's work, In fact, the members have seemed thoroughly thor-oughly pleased with the results to date.' " 'I am convinced that the metal would have sold considerably below the year's average price during 1909. If It had not been for the Producers' ro-ports,' ro-ports,' said another member. 'The result re-sult of thf monthly reports which has elicited the most approval Is tho fact that during the last year It has not been possible to set afloat such absurd and exaggerated reports of stocks on hand, etc., as were so often current before the figures were given out. T. for one, should be very sorry to see tho monthly reports abandoned, slnco It seems to mo that they make for a greater degree of stability In the metal trade.' " New York Mining Stocks. James A.
