Acconl-ing Acconl-ing to present, indications immigration io the United States for the fiscal year 1910 promises fo reach one million pco-pie, pco-pie, if tho record for tho first nine months of tho year is maintained- Tha arrivals for March were 136,745 and for the nine months of the fiscal year 6(37,049. t It has been several years sinco tha immigration figures reached the mil-lion mil-lion mark, the Ia6t year being 1907, when 1.285,349 aliens were admitted to the United States. Of tho immigrants who were admitted during March, 110,-207 110,-207 woio male and 26,538 were female. Of these S400 were German, 31,806 were from tho south of Italy, 2203 were Polish and 5906 wero Greek. Tor tho first seven months of tho fis- fl cal year, that is, from July last; to January, inclusive, 12,002 immigrants were debarred. Of these 209 were kept out .because of insanity or feeble men-tali men-tali tj- in somo form, 1655 because they had a loathsome or dangerous conta-cious conta-cious disease, 7768 because they wero liable to become a public charge and 859 because it was charged they wore con-tract con-tract laborers. Tho immigration laws provide that, fM for good cause, immigrants who have been in this country for somo time may-be may-be sent back. In that- category, the IH immigration bureau, for the seven months, returned to the country whence IH they came, 422 persons because of in- jH sanity or other mental conditions. |
