C opposed to the Commercial club's traffic traf-fic bureau here are taking steps to counteract tho effects of tho petition which is to be presented to tho interstate inter-state commerce commission there in behalf be-half of the shippers of ibis state, is evident from dispatches sent, from Washington, staling that, an amended petition had been filed with the interstate inter-state commerce commission by the Commercial club traffic bureau of Salt La he Ci(y. t was givon out from tlm office of the Commercial club irnlho. bureau here Friday that the amended petition had not only not. been tiled, but that it had just been completer on Friday and was now read- for the printer?. Sutherland's Tclogram. A telegram from Senator Sutherland, under date of Juue 10, was shown by Mr. Babcock. commissioner of traffic for the bureau, which throws some, light on the matter. The telegram follows: "S, 71. Babcock. Commercial Club Traffic Bureau, Salt Lake City, .Mine 10. 1000. 'Complaint is in good shape, should be filed at once. Am writing today. ' Mr. Babcock remarked that the telg. gram was pretty good evidence that the petition had not. yet been filed, and that Sonator Sutherland was anxiously awaiting the arrival of the document. An explanation of the matter is offered of-fered in the following: On Tuesday afternoon Mr. Babcock stated to some of the Salt Lake newspapers thai he had been informed by Senator Smoot in Washington that " the preliminary draft of the amended petition, which had been sent to him for examination, was satisfactory as" to form and that the regular petition should be forwarded forward-ed as soon as possible. Mr. Babcock stilted that it was the intention of officers of tho bureau here to push the petition to completion as rapidly as possible and have it printed at. once. This operation will require several days, so that there, is no possi-bilitv possi-bilitv of the )Otition reaching .the interstate commerce commission for tcu days or more. Portion Forwarded. Onlv a portion of the preliminary draft "was torwprded to Senator Smoot. so that there is absolutely no ground whatever. Mr. Babcock says, for the statement that the amended petition lias been tiled. Clerks in the office of the Commercial club traffic bureau were working on the details of the document Friday afternoon after-noon ami reading proof of some portions por-tions of the tabulations. -lust when the petition would bo forwarded to Washington could not be told. Tt was explained that it would be eut just as soon as ready, however, and that the completion depended largely on the rapidity with which the printers accomplished ac-complished their work. , |
