He was educated for the profession of civil engineer and was one of the inen who helped to survey the roadbed of the Michigan Central railroad, After the railroad had been surveyed, .Mr. Wilder severed his connection wit h that company and went to Cuba, where he managed a number of copper properties, prop-erties, until shortly before tlio Civil war, when he returned to tho United States. At the opening of tho war he entered the Confederate army and ami served throughout the war with distinction. dis-tinction. Later, Mr. Wilder went to San Francisco, Fran-cisco, which pbico ho mado his home for a number of years. It, was during dur-ing his residence I here that ho becaino the superintendent of tho Virginia City mine, which afterwards became tho Virginia Vir-ginia Citv Consolidated. ' Still lat'er. Mr. Wilder camo to Utah, where ho engaged in tho mining business busi-ness on an extensivo scale.
