Show CAPTAIN ROALD AMUNDSEN. Captain Roald Amundsen, tho famous Arctic explorer (though not a north polo chaser), is in -this country. He will be remembered ns the one man. of all who sought the Northwest Passage, who found it. Ho also rediscovered and exactly located tho magnetic pole. His services to scienco have been valuable, and thero has never boon the least uncertaint3' or dispute about them. Ho is now about to start on a float ing vo3'ago of discovery which he hopes will take him to the north pole, or very close to it. And, as ho intends in-tends to avail himself of the well-known well-known easterly drift of tho Arctic ice, ho intends to drift with it from the west, and not strive against it 03' starting start-ing from tho cast or the south. He will go through Bering Strait, and make northward from there, falling in with tho eastward moving ico pack. The Scientific American outlines his plan as follows: Captain Amundsen has come here to make preparations for an expedition to tho Arctic which lie calculated would keep him away from civilization probably moro than Ave years. His primary ob-joct ob-joct will bo to explore the ocean depths of tho region, to study the currents and temperatures and the character of the ocean bottoms. lie will start from San Francisco In July, 1911, in the -100-ton gasoline auxiliary schooner "Fram," which was used by Nansen In his trip to the North. Tho Norwegian government govern-ment h3 put up $20,000 for tho expedition, expedi-tion, and thoro liavo been many private subscriptions from well-to-do Scandinavians Scandina-vians Interested in polar exploration and desirous of having their own people win tho glory of discovery. Captain Amundsen Amund-sen savs his calculations In regard to the drift of the "GJoa" wero verified by . events, and that he believes that tho "Fram" will take the course that he Is confident the drift will force her to take. He can assist In making that courso prolly nearly across the pole by tho uso of his gasoline engine at periods when the pack will pormlt him to steer. |
