Show OHURCH COGS NEVER SLIP. Reluctant to acknowledge the entire freedom of the delegates and tho independent, inde-pendent, uncontrolled action of the American county conventiou, the opposition oppo-sition press put their comment in the form that some of tho cogs slipped, pretending that there was a slate, that some terrible "inner circle" had framed up. This, however, is but the mean-spirited and grudging way of the opposition: they kuow that it was an open, free convention, not only uncontrolled uncon-trolled but uncontrollable. On the other hand, how is it with tho conventions of the church-controlled old parties? Do they ever "slip a cog?" Never. The delegate who in a church-coutrollcd political convention should propose something not prepared beforehand, undor tho inspired in-spired authority of the priesthood, either by way of support of an anti-slate anti-slate candidate or in proposing a platform plat-form plank, would be openly accused of apostasy, as indeed has actualb happened hap-pened in a ".Republican" State convention. con-vention. Oh. no! The church machine- cogs never slip. |
