Snowbound at tho crest- of tho Conti- 1 nentnl divide, at iho Alpine tunnel on the Colorado & Southern railroad, a party of seven is in imminent danger of starvin-,. according to a party of nino men who reached hero last night after a terrible strugglo through tho deep snow. The men who arrived here are snow-shovclers and left Alpino pass, 13,000 feet above sea level, Friday morning. Ten hours was spent in making tho first six miles, as only two of tho party had snowshocs. Thu snow in places was found to bo from twenty to fifty feet in depth, uud a number of times tho little party had narrow escapes es-capes from dotilh by snowslides. According to their stories, tho party at Alpine tunnel consists of Larry Waters Wa-ters and his wife, who run tho eating houso, and,fivo trackmen, three of them sick. They had nothing left to eat except a limited supply of coffee and flour, enough for about two daj'H, and yesterday's now storm makes it problematical prob-lematical when tho rotary plows will bo able to open tho lino. |
