Show "THE AMAZONS" AT SALT LAKE THEATER Pair-Sized Audience Witnessed , ilie Production by University Summer School, t Only a fair-sired audience, turned out ito withies the production of "Tho Emnzons" by tho University summer school at tho Salt iUiko Theater last flight. ".J. Tho play, a difficult ono even to profes-.'slonals, profes-.'slonals, was quite elaborately otngeil, 'and, like most amateur productions, was good In some places but weak In others. -The story of "Tho Amazons" Is too well known to deserve special comment; nutllco It to say that It was put on In very nearly Its original form. Notwithstanding Notwith-standing this, however, tho audience rc-molned rc-molned In a cheerful mood throughout and applauded heartily at every sally of the Irrepressible Count do Grlvcl (JI. l-. 3lnrshall) and the mincing, foppish Karl of Tweenways (David W. Cummlngs) Those two parts woro easily tho bright Epots in I ho production, although the work of Cllli'ord Ashley as Barrington, Viscount Lattcrby, showed certain elements ele-ments of strength. Of tho female parts Miss Nan Clawson made tho most of a short, Insufficient opportunity as "Sergeant" "Ser-geant" Shutcr There was but llttlo room for choice between the Misses Evans, Peterson and Blttner In their respective roles a tho "three Amazons," and, all points considered, all threo aro ontltled to credit for tho way they handled their sometimes dlfllcult situations. The Individual Indi-vidual work of tho entire company was good, on the whole, but a certain amount of hesitancy, which was not lost on the audience, and a strained, unnatural handling han-dling of the dlaloguo In some of the scenes served to district attention from the play, and the result left a good deal to be desired. "The Amazons," as a play, Ik practically practi-cally without a lead, and to bo staged successfully requires nn all-star cast. Such being the case. It Is perhaps only ' just to say that a large majority of tho i audience probably thoroughly onjoyed the 1 performance. Should another rendition ' be contemplated, efficient stage mnnagc-1 mnnagc-1 .mcnt, coupled with a scvero course of rehearsals, might be made to result in quite a finished performance- |
